Frequently Asked Questions

Do I qualify for the VAR program?

To qualify, your company should be a water treatment service provider, consultant, or equipment supplier to any commercial, institutional, or industrial facility and have direct interaction with facility management personnel. A simple review of your business offering will be reviewed by Phigenics to ensure that your company qualifies.

What is my benefit to being a VAR?

As a Phigenics VAR of our test products, you have access to the fastest, most accurate, and most comprehensive Legionella test services available. One benefit is that you are able to provide your customers accurate analysis in 2-3 business days after shipment instead of the 10 business days that it takes to receive analysis from the commonly-used ISO spread plate method. This allows you to share accurate results with your customers faster with reports that are more comprehensive than other labs offer. The ultimate benefit is that you and your customer can be assured of accurate results and can take action, if necessary, in a timely manner.

How does this program offering benefit my customer?

The safety of your customers' water systems are one of their utmost concerns. When they are ready to validate their water systems, they want to be assured that their results are accurate and are received timely and efficiently. Unfortunately, the standard Legionella tests require incubation for 10 days (once received in the lab); this can feel like an eternity for facility managers! In addition, it is unlikely that the Legionella or total bacteria levels that were in their system at the time the sample was drawn are anything like those levels in their systems when the test report shows up 10-14 days later! Facility managers want and need accurate, fast, and comprehensive Legionella and total bacteria analysis.

Is there any literature available to help me communicate the value of the PVT to my customers?

What exactly are the products that you are offering and that I would sell to my customer?

What are the unique features of these Phigenics Validation Test (PVT) products?

The PVT products, using the TimeZero test method, are a field inoculation protocol to obtain viable cell concentrations (as CFU/ml) for the following from the same sample:

  • total heterotrophic aerobic bacteria (THAB)
  • Legionella pneumophila (serogroup 1)
  • Legionella pneumophila (serogroup 2-14)
  • non-pneumophila Legionella species

Data is obtained for the exact moment when the PVT dipslide contacts the water sample

  • shipment of water samples to the lab is not required
  • time required to obtain results is reduced 75-80% compared to the popular ISO spread plate method

What are the unique benefits of these Phigenics Validation Test (PVT) products?

  • More accurate because variations due to changes in water samples during shipment are entirely eliminated
  • Faster because culturing occurs at the time samples ("time zero") are drawn and results are typically communicated 2-3 days after receipt in the lab
  • More comprehensive because
    • Legionella bacteria and total heterotrophic aerobic bacteria (THAB) are obtained from the same sample with one protocol
    • Results are reported electronically with digital images and chain of custody records and are automatically archived in the Phigenics web-based analytics platform, providing access to results at any time
    • PVT test products can include both ISO and PCR methods

Does this test give me viable Legionella test results?

Yes, the PVT test using the TimeZero method measures viable (live) Legionella measured in CFU/ml. If choosing the PVT with ISO test, both test results measure viable Legionella measured in CFU/ml. If choosing the PVT Premium test, the PVT and the ISO measure viable Legionella measured in CFU/ml and the PCR measures viable and non-viable Legionella.

Does this test quantify the counts of L. pneumophila serogroup 1, 2-14, and Legionella species?

Yes, all three options for the PVT test using the TimeZero method report Legionella in CFU/ml for each of these Legionella types.

Specifically, how is this PVT test faster and more accurate?

This unique test is a "time zero" (t=0) dipslide format, which means that the sample is inoculated immediately in the field and thereby eliminates inaccuracies, due to bacterial growth or decline, in water samples during transport to the laboratory. Other conventional tests, including the ISO 11731 Legionella test, are inoculated via spread plating after the drawn water sample is shipped to a laboratory. The delay due to shipping often causes inaccurate results due to sample holding time effects. In fact, scientific survey results show that a statistically-significant number of ISO 11731 spread plate analyses return a false-positive result.1 In addition, the PVT test is analyzed in the Phigenics laboratory 2-3 days after receipt. In contrast, the commonly-used ISO spread plate test is not analyzed until 10-14 days after receipt in the lab.

1. "Inaccuracy in Legionella Tests of Building Water Systems Due to Sample Holding Time," Water Research, 2012

How is this PVT test more comprehensive than most others?

The PVT, using the TimeZero method, includes both Legionella and total bacteria results. Specifically:

  • Legionella pneumophila (serogroup 1 and 2-14)
  • non-pneumophila Legionella species
  • total heterotrophic aerobic bacteria (THAB)

The Phigenics Analytical Report and Summary Report include digital-image records of your dipslide and identifies the specific Legionella cultures, if present. Chain of custody labeling ensures that the dipslide in your report is actually yours.

Which option of the tests do I want to order and why?

What is the level of detection for the PVT?

The level of detection for the PVT is 10 CFU/ml which is the practical limit of quantification according to results published by the CDC.

How do the Phigenics PVT tests compare to what other labs offer?
